When you think about it, walking a trade show floor is quite a bit like window shopping. Or, perhaps more accurately, like strolling through the bazaar in Istanbul (but, hey, how often do we stroll through a bazaar?). Now, those “exhibitors” at the bazaar in Istanbul could teach us a thing or two. You get within 10 feet of one and he has you pegged. Ten to one he has figured out your nationality from the clothes you wear. “Mister, I've got sweaters at a fraction of the cost you would pay in the States. Where are you from? New York! My best friend lives in New York.”

As John Seely Brown and Paul Duguid tell us, “The way forward is paradoxically to look not ahead, but to look around.”
Tradeshows have undergone more changes during the past five years than in the preceding 100. The changes are due mainly to a fast-growing array of new technologies and tools--but also to changes in expectations and how people find information.
I’ve heard folks in their 20’s and 30’s complain about how exhausted they are from staffing an exhibit. I doubt very much that Walt Bentson, a retired IBM division vice-president, would complain or, for that matter, even be exhausted from booth duty.
Some months ago I wrote a couple of posts, one of which made the case for staffing your exhibit with “seasoned” personnel, the other advocating the use of “yoots”, as Cousin Vinnie would refer to a younger generation. Which is more valuable on the show floor, the supposed skill and wisdom of we elders, along with the sense of duty perhaps more common in the older generation, or the stamina and enthusiasm of twenty-somethings?

Bubbles, our nearly 12-year old Maltese, has trained me well, too well. If you are a sales manager, perhaps your sales people have trained you well. Whoa! You say that you can’t compare a sales person to a dog? You know, you’re right. Your dog will always remain loyal.
I trained Bubbles initially by rewarding her with a treat upon successful completion of her “business” when I walked her. Over time, Bubbles got wise and she performed a little jujitsu of sorts. Instead of relieving herself all at once, she has mastered the technique of doing a little at a time. Each time, she quickly turns around, dances on her hind legs and looks at me beseechingly. The message is clear: I’ve done what you trained me to do, now cough up, fella.

Yesterday, February 3rd, Verizon Wireless opened up its online store from 3 AM to 5AM to current subscribers for pre-orders of the iPhone 4. How many did they sell? All they had, or put another way, more iPhones were sold in those early morning hours than any other phone Verizon has sold during the entire first day of a product launch.
