Like a lot of guys my age, I am a diligent obituary reader. Aside from the reassurance that comes with not seeing my name there, obituaries contain exceedingly interesting stories and some of the best prose you will find in a daily newspaper, to whit: the following New York Times obit about Sol Steinmetz, renowned, writer and lexicographer (and rabbi) who died on October 13th. “He never had a bad word to say about anyone", said Jesse Sheidlower, the editor at large of the Oxford English Dictionary and a former protégé. "And he knew a lot of bad words."
